IKEA is set to launch several new store locations, exciting fans and furniture enthusiasts alike. Get the details on when and where you can find the latest additions to their global footprint.
IKEA, the Swedish furniture giant, is expanding its global footprint with a series of new store openings across multiple continents in 2024. The company plans to launch 17 new locations, including smaller-format stores in urban centers and traditional warehouses in emerging markets. These strategic moves aim to enhance accessibility for 50 million more customers annually while adapting to post-pandemic shopping trends.
IKEA’s 2024 expansion focuses on three primary regions: North America, Southeast Asia, and Europe. The company will open eight stores in the U.S. and Canada, including innovative “plan and order points” in cities like Austin and Toronto. Meanwhile, Southeast Asia will welcome four new locations, with Manila and Jakarta as priority markets.
“We’re seeing unprecedented demand in Southeast Asia,” says Lena Müller, IKEA’s Global Expansion Director. “The middle class in these markets has grown 28% since 2020, and they’re eager for affordable, stylish home solutions.”
The retailer is experimenting with hybrid models that blend physical and digital experiences. New “IKEA Meeting Points” will occupy 15,000-20,000 square feet—just 20% the size of traditional warehouses—while offering full product ranges through augmented reality displays and same-day delivery partnerships.
Retail analyst James Whitfield notes: “IKEA’s shift toward urban centers reflects broader industry trends. Their data shows 63% of customers now prefer to browse in person but have items delivered, especially millennials and Gen Z shoppers.”
Each new IKEA location typically creates 300-500 direct jobs and stimulates 1,200+ indirect positions in surrounding communities. The 2024 expansion will inject approximately $2.3 billion into local economies through:
Notably, 40% of new hires will come from underserved communities as part of IKEA’s diversity initiatives. The company has pledged $180 million toward workforce development programs in expansion areas.
All new locations will feature solar panels, EV charging stations, and zero-waste operational targets. The Manila store, opening Q3 2024, will be IKEA’s first fully circular facility in Asia—designed to repurpose 95% of construction materials and operate on 100% renewable energy.
“Climate action isn’t optional anymore,” states Climate Officer Erik Lundqvist. “Our new stores must meet 2030 sustainability goals today, especially in regions vulnerable to climate change.”
The 2024 stores will debut several innovations:
Early reactions have been positive. “The Jakarta concept store perfectly blends Scandinavian design with Indonesian living needs,” shares frequent customer Dewi Sari. “They even incorporated traditional batik patterns into some textiles.”
Some analysts question whether IKEA can maintain its value proposition amid rising costs. The company acknowledges a 12% average price increase since 2022 but emphasizes that new store efficiencies will curb further hikes. Supply chain diversification—with 35% of products now sourced regionally—also helps control expenses.
Additionally, labor unions have raised concerns about wage standards in new markets. IKEA has committed to paying 15-20% above local retail averages and providing upskilling programs.
By 2025, IKEA plans to have 70% of the global population within 90 minutes of an IKEA touchpoint—whether a full store, pickup location, or design studio. This expansion represents the most aggressive growth phase since the company’s 2000s international push.
As retail landscapes evolve, IKEA appears determined to remain relevant through physical spaces that complement rather than compete with digital channels. For the latest updates on store openings near you, visit IKEA’s official location tracker and sign up for location-specific notifications.
